Without question, the most rabid Dead crowds I ever saw were in good old blue-collar Springfield MA. That place had a (kind of wonderfully) dangerous energy unlike any other place I saw them.

I do think that it's part of the puritan thing, for the same reason that "Catholic high school girls" are famous. All that repression inevitably leads to release ...

One man's opinion ... you know what it's worth.

79 was a great year for mass. dead heads - 2 shows in springfield w/donna & keith & then with brent, umass amherst, billerica (wtf?), cape cod - that's pretty good variety for 1 year - if only they had played tanglewood in the berkshires...they would have covered the entire state!

I missed Billerica! I would love to have seen that show, and the only recordings I've ever seen are really bad auds.
UMass was my first show and I totally did not get it, but Augusta in September, followed by Springfield, Cape Cod, and Providence in October were mroe than enough to do the job ...

Nice...I am jealous. I was only seven in 79 so the dead were quite a few years off for me. I am a brent fan and I really like the 79-81 era. So where did they play in Billerica? Seems so odd that they played there.

The Billerica Forum - and this is a source that I don't believe I've heard, so thank you for bringing up this show. It's got the CM imprimatur on it, so it can't be half bad

FYI Billerica does have a world-class Bertha nestled at the end of it's second set. The Black Peter is pretty terrific too, and the Charlie Miller-mastered aud sounds terrific.
